SUSMITA SENGUPTA
She is the senior programme manager of CSE’s Water Programme. A geologist by training having more than 19 years’ experience in research on water management and sanitation in India and Global South. She has been leading the work on water harvesting, lake management and river pollution in CSE. Her current responsibilities include capacity building, research, knowledge dissemination and policy advocacy in water management and sanitation. She has contributed in the writing, compilation and preparation of various scientific education materials in international journals, books and reports under the broad theme of rock, soil, aquifer, groundwater and wetland management, and sanitation. She is a regular contributor to CSE’s fortnightly magazine Down to Earth.

Education:

Masters in Geology from University of Calcutta. Qualified GATE.
• Experience of research in the field of rocks, minerals, groundwater, surface water, rainwater harvesting system and artificial recharging, development of water resources, qualitative problems such as salinity, hardness etc. groundwater pollution such as industrial, domestic and municipal source of pollution
• Contributed to reports and documents both as Junior Research and Senior Research Fellow
• Qualified Joint-CSIR National eligibility Test for Lectureship, 1999
• Attended a course on “Genesis and evolution of Geothermal systems with special reference to the mechanics of magma generation” in 1999, conducted by University of Delhi and CNR-International Institute for Geothermal Research, International School of Geothermics, Pisa-Italy
• Attended a course on Remote Sensing and GIS organised by University of Delhi and GIS Institute (CSDMS), Noida

Affiliations and Achievements:

• Presented papers in 7th World Water Forum, Daegu, South Korea. UNESCO and Austria jointly organised the Water Forum. Presented paper in a session on "rivers—cradles of civilisation and sacred rivers"
• The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy under the National University of Singapore organised a conference on “Governance and Public Policy for Ganga rejuvenation” on 9 July 2015. I was invited as an expert committee member to evaluate a study done on the said topic by the school
• Presented a research on water scarcity and traditional wisdom to meet this - in Jaipur in a workshop organised by Indira Gandhi Panchayati Raj and Gramin Vikas Sansthan, Government of Rajasthan in September, 2015
• Attended United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) – 16th Conference of Parties at Riyadh, 2024
