EQUATIONS (Equitable Tourism Options) from March 1996 – June 1998
EQUATIONS is a research and documentation center for tourism studies. EQUATIONS seek to situate the tourism critique within the overall development debate. EQUATIONS activities include documentation, publications, research and supporting individuals and groups involved in concerted action on tourism concerns.

Role - Program Coordinator

Responsibilities
Major task was to build up extensive network in Karnataka among academia, grass root level organizations, Also in-charge of the issue of research on child prostitution issue, which cuts across the geographical boundaries of the states.

Some of the major movements / accomplishments involved were:

Struggle of Adivasis (Jenu Kuruba) at Nagarahole against a five star resort which was planned in Nagarahole in the name of ecotourism. Provided Campaign Information support to the entire movement. The documentations which we provided by us proved to be one of the strong points for the grass root organizations who won the battle

Fishing community’s struggle at Majali, Karwar, against loss of their land and their access to fishing at Arabian Sea due to a beach resort which was planned. Here again, we built strong network of activists and media representatives to make sure that the justice was provided to the fishing community.

Part of interactive sessions with government in terms of critiquing Karnataka State Tourism policy and created documentation towards sustainable development with tourism being part of the development debate.

Built strong networks among academia, media, thiktanks, fishing communities, Adivasi communitie and grass root NGOs in the locations like Sirsi, Banavasi, Mangalore, Uppunda, Udupi, Mysore, Gokarna and other locations where tourism was considered as one of the key economy makers.

Conducted a ground reality check for CRY on Migration of Children from Karnataka to Goa, where the children were forced to get into child prostitution, which, once again is, the result of irrational tourism activities.

Initiated discussions with academia in terms of sensitize the student community about sustainable model of tourism and address tourism as part of the development debate.

Documentation in Kannada, translation of English documents to Kannada, articles and papers presentations on issues related to tourism and working towards sustainable model of tourism

Handling the internal policy matters at EQUATIONS like internal review meetings, assisting the organizers of different meetings within the organization. This helped the team to have the meetings more interactive than being just a monologues and update sessions.
