During the first year of internship I worked as Community Mobilizer with special focus on mobilizing children in the Madanpur Khadar community and preparing them for the Inter Agency sports and cultural meet held annually in the department of Social work.
During the second year while working with Society For Promotion of Youth & Masses in night shelter camps of the organisation, I got an opportunity of working with street children engaged in beggary. I was involved in providing sports training to the children and diverting their energies into meaningful directions.
I have had an opportunity to work with PRATYeK NINEISMINE as a National Coordinator wherein my job responsibilities included developing training modules and facilitating training workshops and programs for children and adult facilitators to encourage children's participation and child led advocacy actions.
Education:
Completing my masters from a reputed social work institution like Jamia Millia Islamia came with its set of opportunities and challenges. The pedagogy was an amalgamation of both theoretical and practical knowledge. The students went through a lot of enriching experiences which immensely helped them to become better professionals, understanding the nitty-gritties of social work profession.
The method of teaching involved learning the foundations of the Social work in order to better understand the subject as well as real life situations we were or could encounter as social work professionals. The exercises involved skill labs in which the students were learn through a set of exercises and activities which was in sync with the motto learning through doing. Moreover, the students were required to go to fieldwork to various communities which gave them practical knowledge on how to deal with people at grass roots level. For many of us it was an experience we had never encountered before. If in dilemma or difficulty, we had both department as well as on- field supervisors to discuss an execute our plan we intended to carry out during the course of fieldwork.
During the first year of internship I worked as Community Mobilizer with special focus on mobilizing children in the Madanpur Khadar community and preparing them for the Inter Agency sports and cultural meet held annually in the department of Social work. We got a great opportunity to learn about the workings of an urban slum, and got to know about the various stakeholders and the who’s who of the community. The fieldwork came with its own set of challenges like persuading the community children and their parents to hold sessions on a consistent basis.
During the second year while working with Society For Promotion of Youth & Masses in night shelter camps of the organisation, I got an opportunity of working with street children engaged in beggary. I was involved in providing sports training to the children and diverting their energies into meaningful directions. What was exciting for me was the fact that I was holding counselling sessions with drug abuse affected children and trying to find out the adverse circumstances which the children had to face, in order to survive. The organization’s staff played a very supportive role for me to execute my actions which I had planned for the course of fieldwork.
In the final semester, I took up welfare as an area of specialization. The specialization helped me a long way in fine tuning my skills as a social worker at the micro level. I also got an opportunity to lead the placement drive which involved persuading various companies to visit the campus, coordinating various organizations and thereby meeting results on time.
All in all it was a course having a holistic approach towards the social work field and it helped the students immensely to prepare them for the challenges in their social work career.
