Professional Experience:
In 2016, alongside my MA studies, I spent ten months as a Music Volunteer with the Choir With No Name – a charity that runs community choirs across the UK for people that have been affected by homelessness. I was responsible for assisting during choir rehearsals & performances, maintaining decorum, maximising member participation, and assisting the choir director in taking warm-ups as well as helping members having trouble. My major role however was to interact with members and make them feel comfortable and included. We aimed to create a safe community space. I saw first-hand the effects that community participation and singing together has on members’ wellbeing and confidence – documenting my experience in a qualitative research based paper on ‘community music as an enabler of Appadurai’s conception of capacities to aspire’, using the Choir With No Name case study.

I gained in depth insight into workshop design and delivery for community music projects, with a special focus on peace building and rehabilitation in conflict/post conflict regions,
through a four day Community Music Leadership for Peace-building and Social Change workshop, run by Musicians Without Borders at SOAS in July 2016. The course equipped me with tools and practices used by MwB facilitators in their own projects across Europe and MENA, while enabling us to learn from the fruitful discussions with the diverse range of community music practitioners participating in the programme. It concluded with a live workshop facilitated by us where an external audience was invited to take part.

I have spent a year working with arts and cultural events company - Teamwork Arts - in Delhi. My role as Digital Marketing Assistant helped me recognize the importance of storytelling, making me an intuitive marketer who appreciates the significance of creating engaging and memorable online experiences in today’s new media age. I worked on productions such as the Jaipur Literature Festival, META, and the Sounds of Freedom 2014 concert presented in partnership with UN Women. The underlying theme behind the productions and related communications was one of social impact, equal opportunity and access to the arts and promoting spaces for open debate and discussion on pressing social issues. Moreover, in a two person digital team, I had the opportunity to contract agencies, work within tight budgets, and manage a digital agency team of 3-4 people largely on my own in a fast paced and high-energy live events environment.

In summer 2016, I worked as Communications and Research Intern at a start-up – ChainChecked – that works to help businesses comply with the Modern Slavery Act UK. Exposed to the harsh realities of modern slavery and unfair labour practices across the world, I singularly worked on creating a new digital-blog-web strategy for the company and built an online space advocating for ethical & transparent business practices.
