Professional Experience: |
I worked in the development sector after my graduation. Working in an organisation like Participatory Research in Asia provided me with a very pragmatic approach towards understanding development. I participated in various events and worked with a number of projects pertaining to civil society and International development.
Currently I am working with HCL foundation as a Project Associate for one and a half years. and I have had the opportunity to work with varied sectors. I have had the opportunity to work with communities closely and understand the complexities of project implementation on ground. Working with village communities helped me understand that sustainability is not only required but can be innovated in local contexts. I have been a key stakeholder in implementation of social behavior change communication programmes in the village. I was also able to understand ways and means of penetrating into otherwise stringent local structures in order to create a change and work towards enhancing the loves of the village communities. It is imperative for us to understand that holistic development can only happen if we are able to percolate into grassroots and fully understand their ideas of progress and change which is an understanding that I developed working here.

I, Shreya Kuruvilla am a Sustainability professional and am at the inception of my career. My journey in this field is beyond academics and is shaped by the exposure I got in varied ways and forms. Before I go into explaining the nitty-gritty’s of my understanding of sustainability; I would like to elaborate more on my experiences prior to joining the course in TERI.
I did my B.A. in History from St. Stephen’s College; Delhi University. By, studying history I was able to acquire analytical skills along with an understanding of resource scarcity and an understanding of war and conflicts amongst many others. However studying history gave a very important understanding of sustenance and aspects pertaining to the functioning of various systems in society and the dynamics of it. The three pillars of sustainability in itself (economic, environment and social) and its various dynamics are carefully studied and analyzed when studying history. This makes one also realize the importance of the compatibility and harmonic functioning of these three pillars in society.

I can confidently assert that I have a cross sectoral understanding of sustainability and my ability to effectively communicate my ideas will help me bring out the best in me along with urging others to work towards sustainability. I am always open to learning and my zeal for learning will urge me to grab opportunities to not only showcase my potential but also create a platform for others to participate in. Sustainability is not only an ideal but a goal that can be achieved together and not alone.
