Professional Experience:
A global public health communication and advocacy expert, currently a freelance consultant working in global development and public health. Working with top-calibre institutions as clients on assignments related to communication, advocacy, knowledge translation, documentation and management, qualitative research, social and behaviour change communication. 2016-2019: Executive Director, Research, at the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, New Delhi. In this leadership role, led conceptualisation and implementation of activities for the research vertical towards ending all forms of violence against children through credible research on the protection of children, their education and health. The aim was to appropriately communicate sound, research and data driven evidence for advocacy and the catalysis of transformative agendas for making children safe in this world.

2007-2016: Professor and Director, Health Communication, at the Public Health Foundation of India and the Indian Institute of Public Health-Delhi, New Delhi. In this role, she concentrated on health communication, behaviour change, health literacy and advocacy for public health through the creation of diverse communication and advocacy products, field efforts and community mobilization, besides multiple forms of stakeholder outreach. Education and training related to health promotion, health communication and literacy were also a major focus of her work.

2005-2007: Project Director for the Essential Advocacy Project (EAP) at the Futures Group, a technical, advocacy capacity building partner of Avahan – the India AIDS Initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The EAP focused on supporting and enhancing HIV/AIDS advocacy efforts to create a strengthened enabling environment for vulnerable populations to claim their rights.

2001-2005: Editor-in-Chief and Project Director, State-level Programmes, for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) in India and was part of the founding team of the India programme, supporting the initiation of the first AIDS vaccine trial in the country.

For about 15 years (between 1985 and 2001), I was a print-media journalist with a core focus on health, environment and science for development. Principal Correspondent (Health, Science and Environment) for India Today magazine for five years, prior to this, worked as a freelance journalist contributing to several top-rated news magazines and newspapers, both national and international. I was founding editor of TerraGreen, a biweekly electronic newsletter covering environmental and energy topics, published by The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi and of Sankalp, a bimonthly newsletter published by IAVI in India.

I am an award-winning and prolific writer with more than 400 articles and features published in Indian and international newspapers and magazines and peer-reviewed publications. My critically acclaimed book on urban India’s public health scenario, No Place to Go: Stories of Hope and Despair from India’s Ailing Health Sector (Penguin Books), 2004, was short-listed for the New India Foundation Prize, and I have authored five other books.
Education:
I hold a doctoral degree in Reproductive Biology from the University of Delhi. Prior to that I completed my Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees from Hansraj College, University of Delhi, in Botany. I passed out of Queen Mary's School in Delhi, having chosen the science stream in senior school.
