Professional Experience:
I am a lawyer and legal researcher currently based out of Kolkata in India. I have been a human rights advocate since 2014, but my work with refugees and migrants began to take shape in 2016.
With a few colleagues, I started an organization called the Intersectional Feminists Collective (IFC) in 2016 which exclusively works with refugee women from Middle East, North Africa, South and South-East Asia. My projects revolved around physical and mental well-being of the refugees, including conducting advocacy programs, know-your-rights sessions, and capacity building exercises for trainers.

As I was passionate about studying migration and refugee studies, I completed my Master of Laws in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice, Women's Rights and Comparative Constitutional Law from SOAS, University of London, where I focussed on modules such as International Refugee Law, Migration Law, and Justice Reconstruction and Reconstruction in Post Conflict Societies, amongst other subjects.
I also wrote my thesis on ‘Rights of Refugees to Work’, in which I assessed the law and practice in countries that are and aren’t signatories to the Refugee Convention.

Along with my law school, I volunteered as a Student Advocate with the Refugee Law Clinic at University of London in which I dealt with issues such as sexuality as a ground for protection of asylum seekers and worked on cases of declined asylum seekers.

Prior to my work with IFC, I worked as a legal officer with an NGO called Lawyers Collective in India, where I worked on variety of other human rights issues such as access to affordable medicines, right to health, opposing patents on essential medicines through advocacy, litigation and speaking with patient groups in which I helped win cases across India and Egypt which greatly benefitted patient groups.

All in all, I think I have a good mixture of experience in advocacy and academia – and I am trying to build up on the regional expertise as the situation in the global south is constantly evolving.
