At CUTS
As a research assistant, the key work responsibility was to conduct research in the field of environmental economics and policy. I implemented three environmental projects sponsored by international donor agencies such as OECD and OXFAM Novib. As the main project coordinator, I established contact with various organisations in the South Asian region and organised meetings. Research was conducted on the basis of both primary and secondary data. The research was published in the form of papers and chapters in CUTS publications.

The dissemination of CUTS work among relevant stakeholders and enhancing organisation’s reach-out through various media was another important task. In this process, I wrote few articles in collaboration with my colleagues for the national and international newspapers and magazines. To utilise the internet as a medium of advocacy, I created CUTS-TradeForum, an eforum, to facilitate debates and discussions on contemporary issues related to the environment. I also represented the organisation in various national seminars, and few international meetings with the researchers from various countries.

At Climate Connect

The work involved research in the field of renewable energy policies and their impact on the private sector. I would accumulate the news related to clean energy policies, carbon markets and instruments, across the world, and present them in form of articles and reports for the clients. Intermittently, I spoke with policy makers with respect to analyse the reasons behind formulation of certain policies and expected response of the stakeholders.

The key focus of my work was EU Aviation sector, China's carbon policies, and the Indian Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). In the brief period of two month for which I worked at Climate Connect, I also conducted a webinar on Indian RECs for clients in India, Europe, USA and Australia. I also performed weekly update and management the database of CDM projects registered and approved by the UNFCCC.

At Tata Institute of Social Sciences

As a research associate, I worked on following the international negotiations for climate change and sustainable development. I co-authored an article on the same in Economic and Political Weekly (EPW). I led a six people team on a 15 day field study in rural Maharashtra to conduct a census survey of a tribal village to evaluate the rural energy access in the region. I collected both primary and secondary data and analysed the same for various kinds of environmental studies. I also contributed to formulation of project proposals for the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies. I assist Dr. Jayaraman, Dean of the School for Habitat Studies in preparing for certain lectures through generation of powerpoint presentations etc. I also took lectures for graduate student at TISS for softwares like MS Excel and Zotero.

Education:

I hold an MPhil. degree from the School of Habitat Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Prior to this, I completed MA in Economics from Christ College, Bangalore, with a gold medal for attaining the highest rank. I also hold a BA degree in Economics and Political Science from Delhi University. Economics has been the core discipline throughout my university education.

At TISS, I learnt research methodology, and the methods of research from some of the best academicians in the country. I have generated significant understanding and skills at conducting research systematically, both with primary and secondary data. Along with my course, I also took tutorial lectures for the graduate students to teach them certain tools for data analysis. I have attempted to learn and apply both quantitative and qualitative approaches to research.

During MPhil., I also undertook courses in statistics, quantitative tools for research. By working with a team of scientists and engineers at TISS, I gained knowledge of the biophysical aspects of the environment such as nitrogen, carbon, and ecological footprint. I also wrote research papers pertaining to the same subjects. I extensively used MS Excel and SPSS for data analysis for my research in both post graduate degrees and obtained functional knowledge in Geographic Information System (GIS) and optimisation problems. For my current research, I have prepared a model to project future scenarios towards the goal of ‘one earth’ to achieve sustainable development. I used various quantitative methods for data analysis and tools for its presentation suitable to the readers.

While pursuing M.A. Economics, I undertook courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics, public finance which built a sound framework for understanding of the economic problems. Having chosen the specialisation in International Economics, I also learnt about global marketing management techniques and international financial instruments. Additionally, I worked through course on Environmental Economics which involved both theory and practice in the field. With respect to empirical analysis, I completed a rigorous coursework on mathematical economics, advanced statistics and econometrics throughout the degree.

Besides curriculum, I actively participated in writing articles for the college magazines, and was also the editor of a few of them. I have always taken various leadership positions, wherever the opportunity presented itself. I have also been a volunteer with an environmental NGO for the last 5 years and contribute to their research at various levels. I participate actively in the extra-curricular activities.
