Background:
Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters and exclusion from healthcare in more than 65 countries. MSF offers assistance to people based on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
MSF has worked in India since 1999, providing free-of-charge essential healthcare to people in remote areas, and specialist care for people affected by HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, hepatitis C, antibiotic resistance, tuberculosis, kala azar and sexual and gender-based violence. We also respond to natural disasters and other emergencies, provide mental healthcare and advocate for the development of more effective and affordable medicines to improve access to treatment for people everywhere.
We currently run projects in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Manipur, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
MSF was awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 1996 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
Details:
MSF India invites applications for the MSF Media Fellowship. The Fellowship is aimed at journalists who wish to report on issues related to access to essential medicines as a public health concern and will be fully funded. The Fellowship will support reporting assignments for one journalist who can demonstrate the potential for incisive and original reporting. This year’s media fellowship will have cross-national coverage on access to life-saving medicines focusing on India and South Africa.
Topic:
India plays a vital role in providing affordable generic medicines across the developing world . The competition from the Indian generic market, has helped reduce the price of drugs to treat diseases such as HIV, TB, and cancer. However, patent policies, trade agreements and pharmaceutical monopoly have restricted access to many vital drugs that could help save lives across the developing world.
The fellowship will provide an opportunity for a journalist to travel to South Africa and report on various challenges that come with providing access to medicines. India and South Africa both face similar legal and policy challenges. The reported stories should draw links between Intellectual Property laws, trade agreements, patents and how these affect patients and policies in India and South Africa. Fellows should aim to increase public consciousness on these critical issues.
Eligibility:
Professional journalists, including freelancers, working in print, television or digital media in India. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of four years of professional experience in writing on health, the pharmaceutical industry, public policy and/or related issues. Journalists with other focus areas are also encouraged to apply, and will need to submit a statement of purpose highlighting why they are best suited for the fellowship. Journalists working for English and/or national language publication in India are eligible to apply to the MSF Media Fellowship.
