Impact Evaluation Summer School
Verghese Kurien Policy Lab (VKPL)
Institute of Rural Management Anand
(September 26-30, 2016)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Development programs, CSR initiatives & policies are typically designed to change outcomes and induce social impacts. For instance, raise incomes, empower women, improve learning, or reduce illness. Whether or not these changes are actually achieved, is a crucial indicator of program effectiveness, but one that has not been often examined. The fundamental challenge of program evaluation is to establish a causal link between interventions & outcomes.
PEDAGOGY
Classroom based lectures will be combined with workshop-mode presentations and in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative research tools of conducting robust impact evaluations. The instructors would bring in datasets and observation from recently concluded and ongoing impact evaluation studies for better understanding of research tools. The workshop will comprise of several lab sessions to provide hands-on experience of working with real-life data sets using statistical software STATA 14.0. Participants will be provided access to the software during the course of the training program.
LEARNING OUTCOME
There are twofold objectives of this training program: (A) Introduce participants to several experimental & quasi-experimental techniques as well as qualitative methodologies and (B) Develop their research and consulting skills while using these methods.

POST-TRAINING TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND MENTORING
It has been felt time again that participating organizations and consultants require real-time support in conducting robust impact evaluation of programs and development initiatives. The evaluation team at IRMA would be willing to work with participants and hand-hold them in their efforts at an additional cost. Organizations can avail our mentoring services at three levels in terms of duration of support: 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. These can be accessed anytime during 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months respectively, after signing of the technical support contract. The technical support will be limited to one project per contract.
Deliverables, nature and extent of support, associated time-lines and cost will be negotiated on case by case basis. Organizations and individual participants can express their interest in this service within one year of the training program, that is, 30 September 2017.
